What is artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is an area of computer science that emphasizes the creation of intelligent machines that work and reacts like humans. Some of the activities computers with artificial intelligence are designed for include: Speech recognition.

In computer science, artificial intelligence (AI), sometimes called machine intelligence, is intelligence demonstrated by machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence that humans show. Colloquially, the term “artificial intelligence” is often used to describe machines (or computers) that mimic “cognitive” functions that humans associate with the human mind, such as “learning” and “problem solving.”

The modern definition of artificial intelligence (or AI) is “the study and design of intelligent agents” where an intelligent agent is a system that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chances of success.

Types of AI

Theoretical AI says that Intelligence (be it natural or artificial) has three types:

Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI)

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) ( the coolest of all… )

Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI)

It is a stream of intelligence that stands out in the performance of a single task with intelligence. Intelligence learns about a single task that must be performed efficiently and intelligently (intelligently). It is considered a basic concept of AI.

This type of intelligence is achieved by humanity.

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

As the name implies, it is commonly used. Your intelligence / efficiency could be applied to perform various tasks, as well as to learn and improve. It is comparatively as intelligent as the human brain. Unlike ANI, it can be learned and improved to perform various tasks.

Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) ( the coolest of all… )

Super artificial intelligence is an aspect of intelligence that is more powerful and sophisticated than human intelligence. Human intelligence is considered one of the most capable and developed. Super intelligence can overcome human intelligence; can think of abstractions that are impossible to think for humans. The human brain is made of neurons and, therefore, is limited to about one billion neurons.

Uses of AI:

Recent advances in AI have been helped by three factors:

Access to big data generated from e-commerce, businesses, governments, science, wearables, and social media Improvement in machine learning (ML) algorithms—due to the availability of large amounts of data Greater computing power and the rise of cloud-based services—which helps run sophisticated machine learning algorithms.

Applications of AI

AI is important because it can help solve immensely difficult problems in various industries, such as entertainment, education, health, commerce, transportation and public services. AI applications can be grouped into five categories:

Reasoning: The ability to solve problems through logical deduction. e.g. financial asset management, legal assessment, financial application processing, autonomous weapons systems, games

  • Knowledge: The ability to present knowledge about the world. e.g. financial market trading, purchase prediction, fraud prevention, drug creation, medical diagnosis, media recommendation
  • Planning: The ability to set and achieve goals. e.g. inventory management, demand forecasting, predictive maintenance, physical and digital network optimization, navigation, scheduling, logistics
  • Communication: The ability to understand spoken and written language. e.g. real-time translation of spoken and written languages, real-time transcription, intelligent assistants, voice control
  • Perception: The ability to infer things about the world via sounds, images, and other sensory inputs. e.g. medical diagnosis, autonomous vehicles, surveillance

AI trends in various sectors:

Healthcare

AI and ML technology has been particularly useful in the healthcare industry because it generates large amounts of data to train and allows algorithms to detect patterns faster than human analysts.

Entertainment

A familiar application of AI is observed in everyday life with services such as Netflix or Amazon, in which ML algorithms analyze user activity and compare it with that of other users to determine which programs or products to recommend. Algorithms are becoming smart over time, to the point of understanding that a user may wish to buy a product as a gift and not for him, or that different family members have different observation preferences.

Finance

Financial services companies use natural language processing tools based on artificial intelligence to analyze brand sentiment from social media platforms and provide practical advice. Fraud detection is an important application of AI in financial services. For example, Mastercard uses Decision Intelligence technology to analyze several data points to detect fraudulent transactions, improve the accuracy of real-time approval and reduce false falls.

Data security

Cyber attacks are becoming a growing reality with the move to a digital world. There are also concerns about AI programs turning against systems.

Manufacturing

AI algorithms can influence the manufacturing supply chain by detecting the patterns of demand for products across geographies, socioeconomic segments, and time, and predicting market demand. This, in turn, will affect inventory, raw material sourcing, financing decisions, human staffing, energy consumption, and maintenance of equipment. AI tools help in predicting malfunctions and breakdown of equipment and taking or recommending preemptive actions as well as tracking operating conditions and performance of factory tooling.
